Morgan Tsvangirai’s car was hit at about 1600 hours on Friday as he was heading out of the capital of Harare. He was reportedly heading to his rural home in Buhera, where he had planned to hold a weekend rally. His wife and two others were in the vehicle. The vehicle was hit by a haulage truck, the driver of which was reportedly asleep at the wheel. Mr. Tsvangirai’s car was reportedly rolled three times before coming to a rest, and his wife, Susan Tsvangirai died on impact.
Mr. Tsvangirai is in hospital, in stable condition according to the MDC. He is said to be in a state of shock after the accident. Tsvangirai’s long time rival, President Mugabe and his wife have visited Tsvangirai in hospital.
This accident comes only two days after Tsvangirai made his first address to Parliament. Tsvangirai even after gaining his new position as Prime Minister in a power sharing deal with Mugabe still used his own security forces and convoys, clearly illustrating his lack of trust for the established security forces.
The government of Zimbabwe is currently tackling a bevy of problems: hyperinflation, a food shortage, endemic corruption and a cholera outbreak which is the largest in recent history, killing over 4 000 according to the WHO (World Health Organization). The hospitalization of its Prime Minister will only lead to further disillusionment of the population, in a society which now refuses to use even its own monetary system.
