Testing, Testing, 123

The past few days have seen a fair amount of testing going on, and not just the incredibly emotive stem cell research order, which in my opinion will do a lot of good in the world. I do sympathize with the staunch pro-life advocates, sure, but were a presently incurable disease staring them in the face I’m sure they would take a more open-minded stance on the issue. It’s not just that, though, it’s the fact that President Obama has assured them that measures will be taken to regulate the practice, and use it in conjunction with other, more “morally sound” alternatives. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how the National Health Institute draws up the legislation.
No, the really worrying testing, is the psychological testing of wills and international machismo fueled threats issued between a magnitude of unstable nations this week. First, the Iranians launch a missile, much against the will of the UN Security Council; North Korea then threatened all-out war should the global paranoia finally manage to overpower sensibility. Essentially, in something reminiscent of the Cold War Era, the mutually assured destruction clock is ticking, and Pyongyang has issued a preemptive declaration of war, should their “satellite” be knocked down.
Couple this with the fact that Iran could potentially construct a nuclear bomb, and international tensions are at an all time high. Luckily, however, road rage will be less of an issue, as a recent study has shown that public transportation use is up 4%, leaving the incredibly stressed citizens of at least the US free to boil over on the buses and subways, without the assistance of a speeding vehicle to relieve their tension.
Not to dispute the importance of travel trends in these times of financial crisis, but Warren Buffett foresees a lot of changes in the economy, according to an interview today. His breadth of economic knowledge means his opinions are certainly worth heeding, in any capacity.
Lastly, on the topic of heeding warnings, the Texan Senate has passed an emergency bill with regards to schools for the disabled, one of which had reportedly been abusing pupils. Video footage of the incidents validated countless complaints over a long period and allowed the Senate to ensure that this kind of atrocity never happens again.
It’s comforting to know, that when one’s faith in human nature begins to slip, there are still people out there who will sink to morally reprehensible depths for no good reason. Or wait…I think I messed that up.
