Fayyad, Palestinian PM, Resigns

In advance of talks between President Mahmoud Abbas and rivals Hamas concerning the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has formally submitted his resignation to the President. It seems the economic press is a jumble these days. Day-to-day the general consensus on what is going on with markets is up and down, which, I suppose follows the general consensus seen in actual market performance, when it’s up, it’s up a few hundred points across the board, when it’s down, it’s down a few hundred points across the board. Palestine: Fatah, Hamas Peace Talks

There has been a rapprochement in relations between the Palestinian authorities in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip. Although Fatah has nominal authority over both regions, it is widely understood that Hamas has effective control over the Gaza Strip, as was illustrated in Israel’s recent conflict with Hamas. One of the main policy issues which divides the two factions is that Hamas refuses to recognize the state of Israel and furthermore has, to date, refused to relinquish its right to armed conflict.
