The nationalization of two of North America’s largest automotive companies may have many sociopolitical effects, the extent of which is not yet known. Of course, this is not strictly what is happening: the U.S. and Canadian governments are intervening simply to keep the companies alive, and mandating a new business structure perhaps simply under the guise of ensuring it does not happen again. Rick Wagoner Resigns, GM, Chrysler Deal Renegotiated

Both Canadian and U.S. politicians are on track to revise deadlines provided to General Motors and Chrysler for producing restructuring their businesses after saying the first attempts would be rejected, while in parallel announcements that General Motors’ CEO Rick Wagoner resigned Monday morning at the request of President Obama’s administration. Canadian Auto Workers Reach General Motors Deal

Obama Drops ‘Car Czar’ Idea for Auto Bailout

President Barack Obama’s original idea to implement a single “car czar” position slated with the task of overseeing the restructuring of the entire U.S. auto industry under the bailout package, has been replaced with the creation of a government task force in charge of the $18 billion in loans to Chrysler and GM.
