Sliding Down the Line

Americans are apparently losing sleep over the state of the economy. At least a third of them according to the National Sleep Foundation. This comes as no surprise because the entire mass media is bombarding them with how bad things are while they’re getting mail from the bank, the IRS and their stock broker telling them they either owe money or don’t have any left. Even better than that, Obama wants to eliminate tax cuts instituted by the Bush administration on the upper class, so that they can pay even more money in these hard economic times.
Apparently the Europeans are having a hard go at it as well, the European Central Bank cut interest rates yet again to cope with the economic crisis. The Bank of England went even further, making the deepest cuts into interest rate in more than three hundred years.
This apparent lack of sleep hasn’t stopped either the US or Europe from moving towards a reopening of relations with Russia however. After almost a year of frigid diplomatic relations the three economic powers are starting to talk again, probably because America’s and Europe’s empty purses are making the missions in the Middle-East near impossible. Furthermore, since Russia’s considerable clout in the region may be the only thing able to halt the progression of nuclear development in Iran, NATO needs the Bear more than ever.
In the spirit of cooperation, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, wants to see America move towards a global “New Deal” in which it would take the lead in what one must presume will be a make work project for the entire world. It seems Mr. Brown is hoping the Obama administration already reeling in debt, will foot the bill for the greed and aggressive expansionism of the European Union and the world as a whole. Let’s hope that the Russians accept the olive branch and that the Europeans can dig themselves out of this economic hole without the Americans help.
