Sharif Under House Arrest

Nawaz Sharif, former Prime Minister of Pakistan is being held under house arrest. This after he put his weight behind the movement to reinstate judges sacked by former President Musharraf. President Zardari’s government has claimed that Sharif’s and many other politician’s house arrests are for their own protection; this after the government has banned political assembly because it may encourage “outbreaks of violence”. Mr. Sharif is not to leave his house for three days, according to security officials. Sharif stated that he would be participating in the “long-march” that many lawyers and opposition activists have become a part of.

After months of political wrangling and turmoil, increasing violence and ceding power to radical elements, Sharif has resorted to house arrest in a desperate attempt to halt the actions of his political opposition. This is all occurring as an insurgency in the North West continues to worsen, the global economic crisis tightens its grip and American unmanned drones continue to enter Pakistani territory and violate Pakistan’s sovereignty.
