Recession: One-third of Americans Lose Sleep

A study of sleep patterns by the National Sleep Foundation found that one-third of Americans may be losing sleep over the current state of the financial system and economic collapse within the country.

The study also suggested that poor sleep patterns may be strongly correlated with unhealthy and unsafe lifestyles — those in good health are twice as likely to work more efficiently, exercise and eat healthy as a result of getting enough sleep.

The Foundation says that those reporting sleep issues has increased 13 per cent since 2001 — additionally, those who sleep less than 6 hours per night increased 7 per cent, to 20 per cent and those sleeping eight-or-more fallen 10 per cent to 28 per cent.

“It’s easy to understand why so many people are concerned over the economy and jobs, but sacrificing sleep is the wrong solution. Sleep is essential for productivity and alertness and is a vital sign for one’s overall health.” says David Cloud, National Sleep Foundation.

The poll, titled the Sleep in America (2009) poll was conducted by WB&A Market Research based on a sample of 1,000 adults interviewed via telephone.
