Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister has said that Britain, “Will bring these murderers to justice,” and that, “no murderer will be able to derail a peace process that has the support of the vast majority of the people of Northern Ireland.” This after two soldiers were killed and four inured by a drive by shooting, Saturday March 7th, while they were paying for pizza at a gate to the British Army base in Masserene. The two pizza delivery men were injured by the gun fire.
The Real IRA contacted a Dublin newspaper, The Sunday Tribune, to claim responsibility for the attacks. The Real IRA stated they would, “make no apologies,” for the attacks on the, “British occupiers,” and that there would be no apology for the injuries of the Pizza delivery men because, “they were collaborating with British rule, by serving them.”
The Real IRA was formed after a split occurred in the Provisional IRA during the reconciliation movement in 1997. Former IRA members have stated that they see those who carried out the attacks, as wanting to, “Bring British soldiers back onto the streets,” and resume the war between Northern Ireland and Britain. These are the first attacks to be carried out in 12 years, and have occurred right after police have recieved the most threats against members of state and army officers in 10 years.
Ireland has been at peace since the signing of the Good Friday accords signed in 1998. The Real IRA has said they will be releasing more details over the coming days.
