Ontario Earmarks $7 Billion in Infrastructure

The value of all infrastructure in 2007 was estimated at just under $300 billion - with 60 per cent of that in roads and highways, according to TD Waterhouse - but this year, in effort to fight off recession and plan for long-term growth, a number of government movements have been pushing large infrastructure investments.
This, a $7 billion earmark by the Ontario provincial government to invest explicitly in infrastructure projects this year, complements moves by the federal government and the new U.S. President Barack Obama.
$1 billion will be dedicated to green energy infrastructure projects within the province, which, many orthodox economists feel is an incredibly necessary move in Ontario, where the majority of the energy sources within the province are expected to deplete within less than two decades.
Additionally, other economies including China and the United Kingdom are working on similar green energy and strict infrastructure development projects - economists say that contractionary economies are the best time to implement infrastructure projects, as private investment is at a low, and will not be elbowed out by that of the public infrastructure.
