Environmental Group: 160,000 “Green” Jobs Needed

Sustainable Prosperity, a Canadian environmentalist think-tank that claims to be in the business of “making markets work for the environment,” released a report Wednesday calling for the next federal budget to include a “Green stimulus” citing short-term economic benefits of “job creation.”

“The economy of the future will reward companies that are energy efficient, low polluting and use natural capital wisely. Canada presently lags behind most OECD countries in these areas. This stimulus package offers an unparalleled opportunity to retool the economy with cleaner technology and infrastructure – as other developed countries are doing - to position Canada to compete in the green economy of the future,” says the group’s report, going on to say, “Canada presently lags behind most OECD countries in these areas. This stimulus package offers an unparalleled opportunity to retool the economy with cleaner technology and infrastructure — as other developed countries are doing.”

The group is an important environmental action group in Canada, claiming in the report that a 15 billion Canadian dollar government spending to create green jobs and clean up the environment would provide a well needed economic benefit.

The report goes on to suggest revamping government sponsored investment programs to create green bonds which would allow consumers to direct their savings in to clean and environmentally friendly development opportunities across the country - additionally, a number of economic, environmental and policy oriented tests are run on numerous policies to determine their environmental efficacy.
